How to Keep Your Concrete Looking New

Driveways and patios take a beating from weather, oil, and foot traffic. Regular cleaning and sealing can dramatically extend their life and keep them looking fresh.

Concrete is one of the most durable materials used in residential construction, but it is far from maintenance-free. Driveways, patios, sidewalks, and pool decks are constantly exposed to UV rays, freeze-thaw cycles, oil and chemical spills, and heavy foot or vehicle traffic. Without regular care, even well-poured concrete can look worn and stained within just a few years.

The single most effective thing you can do to protect your concrete is to keep it clean. Dirt, algae, mold, and mildew are not just cosmetic problems — they hold moisture against the surface and accelerate deterioration. A professional pressure washing once or twice a year removes this buildup before it can do lasting damage.

Oil and grease stains are a particular challenge on driveways. These stains penetrate the porous surface of concrete quickly, and the longer they sit, the harder they are to remove. Treating them promptly with a degreaser and hot-water pressure washing gives you the best chance of full removal.

After cleaning, sealing is the next step. A quality concrete sealer fills the pores in the surface, creating a barrier against moisture, stains, and freeze-thaw damage. Sealed concrete is significantly easier to clean and resists the cracking and spalling that comes from water expanding inside the slab during winter.

How often should you seal? For driveways, every two to three years is a good rule of thumb. Patios and pool decks that see heavy use or are exposed to pool chemicals may benefit from annual sealing. You will know it is time to reseal when water no longer beads on the surface.
